Roanoke Based Double Envelope Celebrates 100 years with an Employee Appreciation Event
This year marks the 100 year anniversary of Roanoke based Double Envelope. The company, which is now 100% employee owned through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan), will celebrate this 100 year milestone with an employee appreciation event this weekend. A family fun day and picnic is planned at Waldron Park, near the Plantation Road corporate offices and plant, from 12Noon – 3pm on Saturday. Festivities will include games and activities for children of all ages, a picnic, and recognition of the 100 year anniversary.
“Our employees are the reason Double Envelope has been able to meet the demands and adapt to the changes in our industry over the past 100 years,” states Brian Sass, chairman and CEO of BSC Ventures, the parent company of Double Envelope. “This weekend’s event is our way of recognizing the dedication of our team, but also celebrating the success of Double Envelope over the years.”
Double Envelope was founded in Roanoke in 1917 by the Baer family. The name was derived from its original business of manufacturing two-compartment envelopes for church offerings. The company made the move to its current location on Plantation Road in 1960, opening what was then a 75,000-square-foot facility. Today, the facility encompasses more than 135,000 square feet and is home to manufacturing space and corporate offices. BSC Ventures acquired Double Envelope in 2001.
Double Envelope specializes in the manufacturing of commercial, custom printed and specialty envelopes for the transactional and direct mail industries. With 450 employee owners, it has established itself as one of the fastest growing, most competitive, and financially sound envelope companies in the industry. With four (4) manufacturing plants located in Virginia, Florida, Maryland, and Indiana, Double Envelope has grown to become the 3rd largest custom envelope manufacturer in the United States. Today, Double Envelope has more than $100 million in sales and has grown at an annual rate of 12 percent per year for the last 10 years. The company manufactures more than 7.5 billion envelopes a year.
