The Double Envelope Story

We’ve been manufacturing envelopes for more than 100 years. What started as one tiny shop has grown into a national presence that includes multiple facilities, a coast-to-coast distribution network, and a client roster that reflects decades of trust.

1917

Joseph W. Bauer founds Double Envelope in Roanoke, VA, naming it after the two-compartment church offering envelopes that were popular at the time.

1925

1934

The first “modern” folding machines, F.L. Smithe Wide Ranges, are purchased by Double Envelope

1950

Double Envelope’s market focus shifts from wholesalers and distribution to selling custom envelopes directly to end users and the photo-finishing industry, marking a new era for the company.

1967

Acquiring Pan American Envelope in Miami, Double Envelope expands into the Florida market. The plant was relocated to its current location in Gainesville in 1971.

1987

After 70 years of ownership, the Bauer family elects to sell Double Envelope to a private equity firm.

2001

Double Envelope is acquired by BSC Ventures, where it has more than doubled in size.

2010

With the acquisitions of Oles Envelope in Baltimore, MD and Wolf Envelope in Angola, Indiana, Double Envelope expands its capacity and geographic reach.

2013

Double Envelope acquires Florida Envelope, bringing flat sheet capability and a strong sales presence to the Florida market.

2025

Leaving the downtown Baltimore facility behind, Double Envelope of Maryland moves to a modernized, newly-remodeled facility in Middle River, Maryland.
